Tennis: Millers beat Shamrocks

The girls tennis season opened Tuesday with an all-county match-up at Noblesville. The Millers defeated Westfield 3-2.
All of the matches were decided in straight sets, although there were some close ones. Noblesville's wins came from freshmen Lexi Lunte at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1), freshman Kelsey Sigman at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-3), and seniors Lauren Deasy and Mandy Learned at No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-0). Deasy qualified for the individual doubles regional last year with now-graduated Emily Samons.
"We're really proud of how they competed," said NHS coach Tim Samons.
The Shamrocks will have a senior-dominated team, as six of the seven varsity players Tuesday were 12th graders. That includes No. 2 singles Olivia Pursell, who won 7-5, 6-0 and No. 2 doubles Lauren Chapman and Kait Flederbach, who won 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).
"I really have high expectations for the season," said WHS coach Trudy Coler. "We're going into this season with six seniors in our varsity. That's a lot of experience and I'm hoping the girls can utilize experience to pull through tough matches."
